1990’s Video Games
With the improvement of computer capabilities in the 1990’s came the development of more advanced and innovative video games. Computers were being made that could hold much more space than previous models. This concept of increased space was introduced to video games as well. ROM cartridges, invented in the early 1990’s, allowed developers to put more detail into the games they were producing. Also introduced was Increased memory storage which allowed users to save their progress and game data. This idea was revolutionary for RPG games in which a player could pick up where they left off in a previous session. The 1990’s represent the takeoff of the Video Gaming Industry. More and more companies were producing games which attracted more people. Genres of games were created and elaborated on that had never been seen before.

Controllers also became more advanced as seen by the creation of the analog stick. The analog stick uses continuous monitored electrical activity to grant a program two-dimensional input. One of the first games to make use of analog sticks was the James Bond inspired game, Goldeneye 007. Possibly the most innovative advancements in the field during this time period was online gaming. Prior to the late 1990’s, most games were either single-player or multiplayer if everyone was in the same room. This changed with the creation of more advanced computer networks and internet capabilities. Online gaming allowed for people on opposite sides on the world to compete with or against each other.
This is a very interesting post on something that has transformed today's society. It can be argued that video games weren't really popular until the 1990s, and with the invention of the controller it popularized the usage of games. People became more involved and today it has evolved into a billion dollar industry. It truly is very interesting to see its evolution into the worldwide activity.
ReplyDeleteInteresting post. Obviously, video games have been a big part of our industry in the last few decades. However, what has truly been their impact on today's society, and specifically involving what some have argued about the negative impact of video games, such as the whole notion that video games were a key motivation of the Columbine Massacre?
ReplyDeleteReally interesting read! Not only were computerized video games more popular, the '90s also saw the rise of held hand video games like the Game Boy and then later the Nintendo DS. This was a whole new realm of video games that also changed the way that people were playing games. It is interesting to think about how much video games have advanced since the '90s and where they will go in the future.
