Rudolph “Rudy” Giuliani, previously a lawyer for the U.S. Department of Justice, was the 107th mayor of New York City from 1994-2001. He was most famous decreasing crime significantly and for being the mayor during the September 11 terrorist attacks.
As the mayor, Giuliani was ruthless when it came to putting an end to crime. During his time as mayor, crime in NYC was at an all time high, appointed William Bratton as the new police commissioner. Together, they they sought to punish all criminals caught for committing any crime, from simple arrests for disorder or violence to murder. Giuliani, with the help of the police, was able to decrease serious crime by one-third and also lessened the city’s murder rate by half. Not only were criminals taken off the streets, police themselves were being saved from potential danger. He also helped to eliminate violence that took place in city jails by ninety-five percent. However, Giuliani faced a lot of criticism as he supposedly released on racial stereotypes and also failed to better the community in terms of education and the public school systems.
The biggest turning point and event of Giuliani’s career as New York City’s mayor was the September 11 attacks. After the twin towers collapsed, and even months after 9/11 Giuliani’s ability to ensure safety in the city was highly questioned. With the major damages structural damage in the city, a lot of money was spent reconstructing the city, especially Ground Zero. However, many of the workers who had helped to restore Ground Zero complained about safety and health measures that were not being taken. They took action by suing the city for $600 million.
Going into his career as mayor, Giuliani was blessed with a solid background in politics. While he did transform New York City into a safer place, he did face a lot of hardships regarding his strict policies to limit crime as well as the events of September 11.
