Why does the American form of government work? Federalist essay 10
At the heart of the American government has always been the pursuit and hunger for liberty and rights. These have been the root of all wars that the American government has taken part in. The quote "Liberty is to faction what air is to fire, an aliment without which it instantly expires. But it could not be less folly to abolish liberty, which is essential to political life, because it nourishes faction"(10) is a great example of this. Madison explains that the government functions because it was the one who preserved its people's liberties and the one who fought for their liberties in the Revolutionary War. He says that if the American people's liberties were taken by the government, then it would have nothing to stand for and the people would revolt. American government works because it fought for the same things that the people fought for and stand by. The next major war that the Americans participated in was also on the matter of liberties. It was the Civil War in which the Union stood by getting the same liberties for all American men, no matter their race. Because the American government fought for the liberties for its whole population it kept its power. World War One was entered in part because the Germans infringed upon the liberties to trade and lives of American citizens by declaring unrestricted warfare in the seas. The US also entered second World War when Pearl Harbor was bombed by Japan, killing hundreds of soldiers and citizens and taking away their rights to life. More recent wars have been fought to preserve other nations liberties, showing the entrenched values of liberty that are the American ideal. The most important American value there has been and ever will be is the liberties that we are given as citizens, our natural rights that we are inherently born with.

I think that the government works because of balance. Because there is balance between the 3 braces of the government and between state and federal governed, no one faction/institution become too powerful. That way all of our liberties and and rights are protected.
