Bush vs Gore Controversy

In the 2000 election between George W. Bush and Al Gore, the electoral vote came down to the swing state Florida. Many people went to bed with the idea that Al Gore won, but Bush had the advantage the next morning. In the first count, it showed that Bush won by 1,800 votes. The vote was so close that by Florida law there had to be an automatic machine recount. The recount ended up giving Bush a close 327 vote lead out of 6 million votes in the state. With a vote count so close that Florida allowed Gore to do a "manual recount".

Gore ordered recounts in four counties with complaints of voting machine errors. There was a deadline for the recount, and three of the four counties were unable to complete the recount on time. The Secretary of State Katherine Harris had the role of certifying the election results, but she had to wait for counties to complete their recount. Harris would only allow tardy recounts if they gave a good explanation to do so, and the 3 counties gave her an excuse, but she rejected them and said that the final vote would be announced a few days later. This rejection was stopped by the Florida Supreme Court, who ordered full recounts.

One of the counties named Miami-Dade admitted it would not complete its recount on time. Secretary of State Harris then announced that Bush won the presidency. Afterward, the Supreme Court announced that the recount was unconstitutional because it violated the 14th Amendment's Equal protection clause. On the day that Bush vs. Gore was decided was also the state deadline for recounts. The recounts were not consistent with the court's orders, so Bush ended up winning.

  1. This is a very great and detailed post about the controversy of the Bush v. Gore presidency race. The case Bush v. Gore was a very interesting case in that the call for holding off the recount in Florida was ruled unconstitutional after one county would be declare that they wouldn't have their recount in before the required time. Do you think that the recount would lead to a different result?

  2. Good detailed article on an interesting topic that we covered briefly in class. Great to have a better understanding of the specifics of what both Gore and Bush argued in this situation. This is certainly a controversy that won´t be forgotten! Well written and good examples.

  3. I liked how you clearly and effectively walked the reader through understanding each aspect of the entire controversy and what each side of the political contest justified their reasons to be in striving for a greater political advantage. I am now able to feel more confident in my knowledge of this particular topic in American history and how it has become a major turning point for future events to take place in the twenty-first century. However, it is important that you also mention the dissenting opinion of the Supreme Court and how that further divided the public with the regards to the election turmoil. That way, one can envision the election from multiple perspectives.
