Background:
JonBenet Ramsey was born on August 6, 1990 in Atlanta, Georgia. She was the youngest of two children and she adored the spotlight. By age 6, she has already owned five pageantry titles: Little Miss Colorado, Little Miss Charlevoix, Colorado State All-Star Kids Cover Girl, America's Royale Miss, and National Tiny Miss Beauty. Being born into the family of a wealthy businessman, and a former beauty queen (Miss Virginia 1977), she was blessed with costumes that put her out in the spotlight even more. The family supported everything so that their two children could live a happy life.
Murder:
On the morning of December 26, 1996, Patsy Ramsey, JonBenet's mother, called the police after finding a three page ransome note demanding one hundred and eighteen thousand dollars for her daughter's safe return. JohnBenet, however, was found dead in the basement later that afternoon. Her skull had been fractured, she had been sexually assaulted and then strangled with a garrote made from one of her mother's paintbrushes. After an autopsy report, the official cause of death was asphyxia by strangulation associated with craniocerebral trauma. Her death was classified as a homicide.
Investigation:
The crime scene itself was compromised because John Ramsey bought JonBenet upstairs upon discovering her body. The police also did not interview the Ramseys after the murder which made the investigation very hard. For the next four years, there was no concret evidence pointing to the culprit, however, the main suspects were the Ramseys themselves. The ransom note was extremely long and unusually specific and was written on a paper that belonged to the Ramseys. The fiber found on the duct tape that was used to bind the child was matched with the fiber found on Patsy's clothing. However, due to the crime scene being compromised, the police were not certain that the Ramseys actually committed the crime. In 1999, the Boulder grand jury voted to indict John and Patsy Ramsey for their alleged role in their daughter's murder, however the Boulder district attorney Alex Hunter, decided not to file charges against them. The case was not talked about for another twenty or so years since there was no new evidence that came up. However, new touch DNA technology brought the case back in July 2008 and the technology seemed to exonertate all members of JonBenet's family. In 2016, DNA evidence from the time of the crime was tested and found that a mixture of DNA was present and more testing is expected in the future.
