Marilyn Monroe

The Legacy of Marilyn Monroe

Even over 50 years after her death, Marilyn Monroe has left a lasting legacy as an iconic symbol of beauty, love, and sex. The art historian Gail Levin went as far to conjecture that she was the most photographed person of the 20th century. Her lasting popularity rivaled only by other icons like Elvis Presley and Mickey Mouse, she has been recognized on numerous occasions for the lasting legacy she left behind. The American Film Institute named her the 6th greatest screen legend in American history, and she was included in the Smithsonian Institute’s list of “100 Most Significant Americans of All Time.”

Her brand is constantly being used to make a profit: flip through any magazine and you will see several photos of women with bleached blond hair and a classic red lip. Taylor Swift wore a red lip and a white halter dress which had a knacking resemblance to the one that Marilyn wore in the movie The Seven Year Itch. Similarly, in a Dolce and Gabbana ad, Scarlett Johansson can be seen sporting hair and makeup similar to Marilyn. Several other companies also used Marilyn’s brand to sell a product, including Chanel, Absolut Vodka, and Max Factor.  Using Monroe’s image to make money keeps her image alive and modern.

  1. I like how you tied an iconic actresses into the present day. I think Marilyn Monroe's iconic legacy is still present today especially in the role of women through early classical films.
