The history of the FBI kicks off in 1908 when U.S. Attorney General Charles Bonaparte orders a group of newly hired federal investigators to report to Chief Examiner Stanley W. Finch of the Department of Justice. This was called the office of the chief examiner before being renamed to the Federal Beauru of Investigation. at the beginning, the FBI consisted of 34 agents compared to the roughly 35,664 agents the FBI has today. The FBI was extremely active during the red scare arresting around 10,000 suspected communists. This was carried out by what many people and even the agency considered a relatively disorganized organization. During 1924 the FBI went through a massive restructuring under acting director Hoover. Carrying out a massive restructuring of the FBI approved by congress the FBI built an extensive system for keeping files and a massive crime lab as well as schools designed to give rise to the new generation of FBI crimefighters.
The 1930's saw the FBI engage in a dramatic and massive attack on the organized crime brought on by prohibition these events were highly dramatized as FBI agents fought and took down massive crime organizations and the public fell in love with the amazing stories of the FBI takedowns and the FBI gained popular support despite being a relatively shady institution. The FBI was then thrust into keeping a lookout for possible enemy spies within U.S the FBI utilized the techniques they used when dealing with the communists and crime organizations. Shockingly the FBI kept up the surveillance after the second world war, keeping out a strict watch for communists. This began what people viewed as an abuse of power this primed the government to place greater restriction on the FBI limiting the terms of the FBI directors to 10 years this action shocked the FBI and when the death of the first and only FBI director came during the watergate scandal, the corruption of the FBI was shown to the world as the FBI took actions to protect Nixon from the investigation these actions appalled the general public and the government this prompted greater surveillance of the surveillance giant.
The FBI then continues to stay in the shadows monitoring the country removing problematic individuals. The spotlight is shined upon the FBI again during the presidency of president Clinton, President Clinton then continues to fire the FBI director on the backing of a massive amount of evidence of evidence and the personal statements of over 100 FBI agents who accuse William Sessions of unethically abusing his power for personal gain this action gained popular support from the public as it was seen as a takedown of an individual who was abusing an institution that was designed for securing public safety. This is a contrast to the second time the FBI director was fired that director being James Comey he was charged by president Trump of being incapable of handling the FBI responsibly citing his handling of the Benghazi investigation. The report points out that FBI director James Comey overstepped his bounds and may have influenced the election whether or not this explanation is enough the decision is supported by two letters from the attorney general and the deputy attorney general instead of the massive data dumped on William Sessions by the Clinton administration.
