The Oklahoma City Bombing

April 19, 1995 marked the two year anniversary of the Waco Standoff. This was also the date in which the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building located in downtown Oklahoma was bombed. This tragic event was one of the biggest terrorists attacks for the United States, prior to the 9/11 attack. Timothy McVeigh, was the man responsible for the death of 168 people, 19 of whom were children, and left more than 600 others injured.

Timothy McVeigh served in the military prior to his federal crimes other than the bombing. He had a strong hate for the government because he feared that the government would be possessive and controlling of the people. Timothy McVeigh did not carry out the plan himself. He had the help of a man named Terry Nichols. These men  parked a rental truck filled with explosives on the North side of the building. At exactly 9:02 am the bomb went off making history in the United States.

At first many believed for this event to be cause by a foreign terrorist. However about an hour after the bombing Timothy McVeigh was arrested for possession of a gun without permission and for a driving violation. Timothy McVeigh was taken to jail for these violations and right before he was suppose to be released he was suspected of having to do something with the Oklahoma bombing. Later Terry Nichols was also detained for being another suspect. Terry Nichols received a life sentence in prison and Timothy McVeigh was given the death penalty.
