The politically incorrect political campaign between Andrew Jackson and John Quincy Adams might seem like to much of a feet to rival in american history, if you think that, you'd be wrong. Nasty political campaigns have been shown multiple times throughout american history and it can even be shown today during the political campaign between Hilary Clinton and Donald Trump.
The allegations against Hilary clinton by the Trump campaign, try to show that Hilary Clinton is sick. There are multiple youtube videos made either by his political advisors or feverent supporters trying to prove that Hilary Clinton is in poor health, and thus unfit to lead the country.
Allegations against Trump from the Clinton campaign are done pretty easily due to trumps nature to speak his mind. However, if we were to focus on the campaign now, the insults that are thrown are much less direct then they were during the Jackson vs Adams election.
This sort of political campaign was also shown through the campaign of Hoover vs Smith in 1928. The campaign fizzled out and attacks on both parties were made. Protestants spread the rumor that if Smith became president, all catholic marriages would not be valid anymore.
It is important to look back at our history and compare the parallels that show themselves, especially when it comes to presidential campaigns. It's easy to call the new election "the nastiest ever" but if you look throughout history, you can see that this was in fact very common.
I like how you made connections between these three presidential campaigns and showed that name calling occurs on both sides and in pretty much every election. I would actually have to disagree that this current election campaign is the "nastiest ever" because the Andrew Jackson vs. Adams election (which you mention) is full of descriptive insults. If this is true, why do you think recent politics are more behaved than politics two hundred years ago?
